Petro Star Inc., a subsidiary of ASRC, operates refineries in North Pole and Valdez, serving the needs of Alaskan customers throughout the state.  Our North Pole Refinery built in 1985 is a 22,000-bbl/day facility, producing heating fuel, kerosene, diesel, jet fuels, and asphalt base oil for the Interior and Northern Alaska communities.  Our Valdez Refinery built in 1993 processes 60,000-bbl/day to produce ultra-low sulfur diesel, jet fuel, JP-8, JP-5, marine diesel, heating fuel and turbine fuel for Alaska’s South Central and South West regions.  Both refineries process North Slope crude oil.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION 

Responsible for monitoring, controlling and conducting activities that pertain to the safe operation of the refinery, taking corrective action when necessary to ensure that all conditions and operations are in compliance with safety, environmental and operating policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

• Monitor process lineups; perform tank gauging and data logging.
• Monitor and adjusts unit controls to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
• Observe instruments, gauges, and meters to verify conformance to specified quality and quantity of product and adjust.
• Oil spill prevention and cleanup directed by Regulatory and safety policies.
• Ensure product quality including sampling and testing of distillate products.
• Operates auxiliary equipment and controls multiple processing units during distilling or treating operations.
• Repairs, lubricates, and maintains equipment or reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor to schedule needed repairs.
• Complete plant improvement and turnaround activities.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and assist in the maintenance and installation of new and existing equipment.
• Perform Process Safety Management (PSM) operator compliance functions.
• Operate plant equipment: i.e. fork lift, loader, skid steer and boom truck. 
• Participate in Process Safety Management OSHA regulated duties.
• Generate reports and logs required by SOP's and Federal regulations.
• Must be willing to live in North Pole or a reasonable distance from the refinery for callouts.
• Work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and working telephone.
• Must have a minimum of five (5) years of work experience either as a Process Operator in an oil refinery/petrochemical plant.
• Must be able to work a rotating 12-hour shift, overtime as required and on-call.
• Ability to effectively utilize computer tools.
• This is a Safety Sensitive Position. Candidates must demonstrate personal commitment to Incident and Injury Free Operations with a proven track record in Safety and Reliability.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associates /Technical Degree from a Process Technology Program.
• Demonstrate ability to be a problem solver. Able to grasp complex issues and apply good problem solving skills to develop recommendations / solutions.
• Looks for opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
• Ability to work closely within a group and with other departments to set priorities, coordinate and follow up on operational objectives.
• Ability to multi-task with changing priorities and assignments.
• Ability to work with fellow employees and customers with different personalities and traits, demonstrating good judgment and communication.   
• Instrumentation - Preventive maintenance / Trouble shooting experience.
• Experience with all process instrumentation, including DCS and emergency systems (HIPPS and ESD devices).
• Experience with Heaters and other fired equipment. (Crude / Asphalt / Hot Oil) - Compliance equipment.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

 Essential Physical Qualifications:  

• The employee must have the ability to climb towers up to 105 foot utilizing ladders and platforms and perform their job at those heights.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Must be able to hear process and system alarms.
• Perform job duties while wearing either a half or full-face respirator.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Comply with Petro Star’s substance abuse policies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PSI is a drug-free workplace.  As such, you will be required to comply with PSI’s substance abuse policies.  This position will participate in DOT/PHMSA pre-employment and random drug testing.  If you have a CDL, this position will participate in DOT/FMCSA pre-employment and random drug testing in lieu of DOT/PHMSA.

This is not a rotational job on the North Slope.  You must live in the Fairbanks / North Pole area or be willing to relocate at your own expense.
